Work as a certified control manager in construction projects

As construction in the country increases, more certified control officers are needed who ensure that building legislation is followed in the construction projects that are started. To become certified you need knowledge, experience and suitability for the task.

What does a controller do?

Controllers (KA) are needed for many construction, demolition and land operations. As a controller, you contribute to the client's project fulfilling the requirements of the building legislation. This means, among other things, that you help the developer make a proposal for a control plan - and make sure that it is followed. You are also involved in the technical consultation, inspections and other inspections as well as writing a statement that will be the basis for the building committee's final message.

Who can become a KA?

In order to become a certified control manager, technical training, experience of practical work in certain parts of the construction area and suitability for the task are required. A person who lacks formal theoretical education but has at least ten years of experience can still be certified. You also need to have good knowledge of the Planning and Building Act (PBL), the Planning and Building Ordinance (PBF), the Swedish Housing Agency's Building Regulations (BBR), European Design Standards (ECS) and control plans.

A varied work with many personal contacts

The work is varied and independent. Since you meet many different types of people, good social skills are an advantage, as is the ability to feel responsible and be able to make different types of decisions.
You decide how much time you want to work. Many supervisors combine the role with another job.
The developer submits proposals to the supervisor in connection with the application for a building permit. The municipality's building committee then decides who should be responsible for control of a particular building project.

Certification with different permissions

All supervisors must be certified by law. Certifications may only be issued by certification bodies, ie companies that have been accredited for this task by the Swedac authority.
You can get certified for two different permissions.
  • Requirement N means that you can work on projects of a normal nature.
    Projects of a normal nature may refer to new construction, extension, remodeling or demolition of one or two dwelling houses. This may also apply to apartment buildings with a maximum of two floors or other types of buildings with a maximum of two floors. Projects of a normal nature can also refer to changes in all types of buildings and sports venues.
  • Eligibility K means that you can work on projects of a complex nature.
    Projects of a complex nature can relate to new construction, extension, remodeling or demolition of buildings with more than two floors, cabin lanes, radio or telemaster and wind turbines. This may also apply to work on fixed cisterns or other fixed plants for chemical products that are hazardous to health and the environment or projects with buildings and plants for flammable activities. Projects of a complex nature may also refer to buildings with large spans.

How do I get certified?

  1. If you want to become a certified supervisor, first read "Boverket's regulations and general advice on certification of supervisors". There you will see what exact requirements are placed on you who are looking for.
  2. Then you should contact one of the companies that issue certificates: Kiwa Sweden or RISE Certification.
